Five Top Tips: Know Before You Go to Ilha Grande, Brazil

Here are my five top tips for what to know before you go to Ilha Grande in Brazil:

1. Take cash – The island does not have an ATM (at the time of writing). Take plenty of cash with you in case, as not all establishments will accept card payments and you don’t want to miss out!

2. Pack a waterproof – The location of this island means the weather is fast-changing. Storms can last from minutes to days, so it can be much wetter than you expect for a tropical island paradise! The humidity is incredibly high, so a light, waterproof jacket is all you need. If you think you’ll be too warm with the layer of a coat, just make sure you have something waterproof to cover your day bag on your day hikes so that your belongings don’t get wet.

3. Wear trainers – One of the charms of Ilha Grande is that it is a pedestrianised island, so naturally you will expect to walk a lot. However, be prepared to walk even more than you imagined! Some of the island’s most spectacular and deserted beaches are a few hours trek on foot, so your usual flip flop attire for a day at the beach simply isn’t practical or safe. The walks are long, but absolutely worth it, hiking through the jungle and on rocky paths, so you will be grateful for sensible footwear.

4. Wear sun cream – It might sound obvious, but even in the shade of the jungle you can easily catch the sun. Ensure you re-apply regularly as you may ‘sweat off’ your sunscreen in the humidity (nice, I know!).

5. Travel safely – Check the forecast before you set off exploring each day. If there looks to be a storm incoming, seek local advice and if they tell you not to go on a particular hike for your own safety, make sure you listen! The locals know best! If you have any concerns, inform your accommodation of your plans for the day, and the rough time you expect to return in the evening so that they know to keep an eye out for you. Be mindful to take plenty of water and sugary snacks out with you too, as some of the hikes are very remote and you may not be able to purchase water for a long time.
