Five Top Tips: What to do in Magdalena, Colombia

Here are my five top tips for what to do in the region of Magdalena:

1. Get to know the capital – Most backpackers will leave Santa Marta city the very same day they arrive, however, by doing this they miss out on discovering a gritty, authentic Colombian city. As one of the oldest cities in the Americas, it is teeming with history. Explore the narrow streets of the old town, enjoy a walk along the promenade at the waterfront, become acquainted with the vibrant street food scene, head out for a night of salsa dancing, or visit some of the beaches in the neighbourhood of Rodadero; Santa Marta has more on offer than most realise.

2. Visit Parque Nacional de Tayrona – Tayrona National Park is one of Colombia’s most famous tourist attractions, and is a must for every visitor to this area for good reason! Buses leave approximately every twenty minutes from Santa Marta and take around one hour. Stay for at least a night in one of the camp sites where hammocks with mosquito nets can be rented, and wake up early to trek before the sun becomes too hot to enjoy the stunning beaches almost to yourself. The protected park is brimming with biodiversity; you will see monkeys, birds, and maybe even sloths if you’re lucky on your hikes to the beach! Take plenty of cash for your entrance fee and to buy supplies in the park; some places accept cards, but signal is limited and temperamental.

3. Relax in Minca – In the mountains just minutes away from the city centre of Santa Marta, is the peaceful, green escape of Minca. A tiny village nestled in the hillside, this cloud forest is the perfect place to step away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hike to waterfalls, head to viewpoints which look out towards the sea over the jungle below, and chill out in giant hammocks- you will leave this place feeling revitalised.

4. Go to Costeño Beach – Just on from Parque Tayrona is Playa Corchales, or the better known Costeño Beach; a favourite with backpackers and somewhere you will stay longer than anticipated. There is a variety of hostels and hotels to choose from along the four-kilometre palm-lined beach which lies in front of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

5. Head on to Palomino - About an hour on from Parque Tayrona is the village of Palomino. This is a backpackers’ haven, with a variety of hostels to relax in, as well as some great restaurants to choose from. Make sure you head to La Frontera restaurant for some of the best pizza you will have on your trip!
