Just south of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon lies the Costa Azul. A stunning coastline, away from the crowds and tourists on the Algarve. Although the water isn’t warm and sometimes the Atlantic wind can affect the temperatures, this charming coastline is a hidden gem.
Here are my five top tips for beaches on the Costa Azul:
1. Praia do Meco - An absolutely breathtaking expanse of totally unspoilt beach. A perfect location to watch the sunset. (No facilities available).
2. Praia dos Galapinhos - The most stunning beach on this area of coast. It is completely unspoilt in the Arrabida National Park with clear waters in a sandy cove which provides protection from the winds.
3. Praia da Figueirinha - A large, open beach with a beautiful backdrop of the Serra da Arrabida National Park. Lovely white sand and clean water. (Restaurant and café facilities available).
4. Praia da Comporta - A 20km spit of sand in pine forests and sand dunes. Powdery white sand, some beach bars and restaurants with sunbed facilities.
5. Praia de Melides - An extensive stretch of sand backed by a lagoon, similar to Comporta yet without the crowds. Lovely, relaxed beach bar near the entrance to the beach which is perfect to enjoy the sunset.
