Here are my five top tips for where to eat out in Tavira:
1. Ti Maria – This is tapas with a twist! Located just outside of the main centre of the town in a pretty side-street, it is well-worth a visit to this restaurant to share some fantastic tapas-style plates. The menu is inspiring, with lots of different flavour combinations, offering a contrast to the typical local dishes on offer.
2. Delizia – The gelato and sorbet flavours change daily; head here for the best ice cream in town! If that isn’t enough to convince you, the queues of people waiting their turn over the Puente Romana prove the popularity and deliciousness of the ice creams at this place!
3. Os Arcos – Although the food here isn’t fancy, a plate of fresh, perfectly-cooked fish served simply with rice or potatoes, the stunning location by the side of the river, the lovely, relaxed atmosphere, and the price of the food make this place well worth a visit one evening!
4. Restaurante Mares – Located close to the ferry terminal by the water, this fish and seafood restaurant will not disappoint. Listen to your waiter’s suggestions for the ‘catch of the day’ and follow their advice! The portions are big, perfect to share amongst your whole table, and the fish is perfectly and deliciously cooked!
5. Gilão Restaurante – The restaurant is set in a beautiful location overlooking the river and has a great menu with some original flavour combinations. Lots of unusual starters on offer; we particularly enjoyed the octopus tempura!
