[PART 1] Five Top Tips: What to pack when backpacking

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

Here are my five top tips for what to pack when backpacking:

1. Flip flops – Not only for the beach, but also for questionable hostel shower floors. They’re also super useful for just relaxing around the hostel.

2. Sleeping bag liner – It is inevitable on a long trip that at some point you will come across bedding that isn’t the cleanest in hostels! In this moment you will be eternally grateful for the sleeping bag liner you have carried around with you.

3. Microfibre towel – They might not be the most luxurious of towels, but they are quick-drying, lightweight, and take up very little space in your bag- all of which you will be grateful for when packing up your bag. Some hostels offer a towel renting service which you can, of course, treat yourself to occasionally when you want the odd respite/break from a microfibre towel!

4. Eye mask – These are great for long bus rides, plane journeys, and hostel rooms with either no curtains, or an annoying roommate who turns the light on at 4am!

5. Padlock – Your hostel will almost certainly have a locker under your bed to store your luggage, but will almost certainly charge a small fortune to hire a padlock if you forget yours! Combination ones work best so you don’t have to worry about losing your key, or trying to find a safe place to store it. Make sure you take a couple in case you leave one behind along the way on your travels!
