Here are my five top tips for how to survive a long-haul flight:
1. Wear comfortable clothes – You may be tempted to wear your jeans to save space in your luggage, but you will regret your decision to choose this over comfort clothing for your flight! Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothes that are easy to move around in. Take plenty of layers too in case the plane is too hot or too cold.
2. Take a good travel pillow, eye mask and ear plugs, and pack your headphones – You don’t know who you will be sitting next to, how bright the cabin will be, or how uncomfortable you will find your seat. Be sure to bring these items to maximise your comfort levels whilst on board. Although many airlines will offer headphones at no extra cost, some budget airlines may charge a small fee and the quality is usually quite poor- you will be very grateful to have your own. They will also be useful on your onward travels too!
3. Keep moving – Make sure you stand up every so often to keep your body moving. Walk up and down the plane, stretching your legs to encourage blood flow.
4. Bring snacks – We all know the standard of food on planes can vary. However, even the least fussy of eaters may struggle especially when they’re hungry or thirsty and are inevitably the last person to be served by the cabin crew! Pack some snacks and drinks for emergencies, ensuring they are below 100ml to take through airport security.
5. Remove make-up, bring skincare – Even if you choose to wear make-up through the airport, once you are on the plane make sure you remove it. The cabin air is dry, and your body will experience decreased blood flow so be sure to cleanse and apply a hydrating serum and moisturiser for the flight. Staying well-hydrated on the flight will also help reduce dryness of the skin from the plane air-conditioning. Take a Chapstick too to stop your lips from drying out. Make sure all products you take are under 100ml in order to take them through airport security. Brush your teeth to complete your routine, which will also help you to sleep as we are used to doing these habits at home at bedtime.
