Here are my five top tips for what to do in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain:
1. Go to the Alcázar - Although much smaller than the more famous alcazar in Seville, the Moorish palace here is still worth a visit! In one of the towers at the palace is the second 'camara oscura' to have been introduced to Spain- take a tour over the rooftops of the town through the camera's mirrors and reflections.
2. Have a flamenco night - Visit Tabanco El Pasaje for a night of flamenco and tapas! Book a table in advance and request a front row seat at this authentic flamenco show with singing, dancing and impressive guitar playing, in a tavern which also offers local tapas dishes to enjoy throughout the show.
3. Visit the cathedral - Head to the Catedral de Jerez, one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, to admire the architecture of its Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical design.
4. Watch a horse show - Jerez is famous for its horses. At the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre (Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art), one of the most prestigious in the world, visitors can enjoy a horse show of the very highest quality. Alternatively, take a guided tour of the site, through the museum, and watch the horses in training inside the arena.
5. Drink sherry - No visit to Jerez is complete without a glass of sherry. As part of the Sherry Triangle, Jerez is full of bodegas, as well as bars where locals and tourists alike can enjoy a glass of fino in the sun. Drink it straight from the barrel at a tabanco for the most authentic experience!
