Here are my five top tips for a long weekend in Budapest:
1. Parliament Building - Budapest’s most famous site and for good reason! The intricate and ornate design of this building is impressive from all angles, including from on both sides of the River Danube where it is located.
2. Fisherman’s Bastion - Avoid the very steep hill by taking the funicular up to the regal area of Buda. From here you can walk along towards the Fisherman’s Bastion at Buda Castle, taking in the elegant architecture on the way, where you will be greeted by a fairy-tale setting with some of the most breath-taking, panoramic views across Pest. It is equally spectacular in the evening when the Parliament Building and bridges are adorned with lights and the buildings are aglow.
3. St Stephen’s Basilica – This impressive cathedral is one of the most significant religious buildings in the city, and dramatically imposes over the square where it is found. Sit in one of the nearby cafés or restaurants, and enjoy and observe the elegance of this important building. On a clear day, make sure you head up to the dome of the cathedral for magnificent views over the city!
4. Eat at Mazel Tov – This upscale yet well-priced restaurant found in the city’s Jewish Quarter is well-worth the visit! Make sure you book in advance to sample some of the most divine Middle Eastern food you’ll have ever eaten. Whilst you are there, take some time to explore the Jewish Quarter where you will find stylish shops and cafés, as well as the infamous Ruin Bars.
5. Ruin Bars - A trip to Budapest is not complete without a visit to the Ruin Bars! Located in old, deserted buildings, these pubs 'wow' visitors with their unique designs and memorable, quirky features.
