Five Top Tips: What to do in the Western Scottish Highlands

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

Here are my five top tips for what to do in the Western Scottish Highlands:

1. Glen Nevis If climbing Ben Nevis itself is a little out of your reach, then head to the well-trodden path at Glen Nevis to the Steall Waterfall- one of Scotland’s highest. Be prepared for breath-taking views over the Glen Nevis Mountain Range, and if you’re brave enough, take on the challenge of the single-wire bridge to cross the river to the bottom of the waterfall.

2. Glen Coe – Walk through the Three Sisters of Glen Coe to the Lost Valley, or Coire Gabhail. A challenging walk, but a beautiful one not to be missed. The walk follows a steep gorge, crosses waterfalls, and ends in the valley. Go prepared for adverse weather conditions!

3. Eat shellfish – Make sure you head to the Lochleven Shellfish Restaurant and shop for some local produce. Check opening times under current restrictions, however, they are offer takeaway fish and shellfish dishes, or delicious fresh fish to take away and cook for yourself. They also sell a variety of local, and Mediterranean deli items to accompany your fresh seafood!

4. Go shopping – It might not be everyone’s top priority, but the area has an abundance of delightful small businesses which offer the perfect gifts- most of which you will want to keep for yourself! Take a break from walking and visit some of the local distilleries for whisky or the evermore popular gin, followed by a trip to the Highland Soap Company for all your natural soap and skincare needs!

5. Glenfinnan – Avid Harry Potter fans will know this place for its appearance in some of the films, however, the scenery in this village will blow everyone away, non-Potterheads included! The iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct which sees a Jacobite Steam Train pass over it twice a day (at certain times of year) is a sight to behold. From the viaduct viewpoint, you will be mesmerised by the views which surround you over Loch Shiel. This place is well-worth a quick visit!
