[PART 1] Five Top Tips: How to stay healthy whilst travelling

Here are my five top tips for how to stay healthy whilst travelling:

1. Vaccinations – Seek medical advice well in advance of travelling to ensure you are protected if the areas you are visiting pose possible exposure to tropical diseases.

2. Cook for yourself – As a travelling foodie, I understand that eating out can feel like something you don’t want to restrict. However, embrace the lifestyle of the locals by doing your food shopping in the same places that they shop, trying all the unusual, fresh produce on offer. Travelling is all about learning the ways of new cultures, and cooking for yourself as the locals do is a great way to expose yourself to different foods across the world. If you prepare sandwiches or salads for lunch, or cook yourself dinner a few nights a week at your accommodation, this also helps save money from your budget, and means more money for treats!

3. Eat lots of fresh fruit and veg, and stay hydrated – Following on from the above tip, focus on buying unprocessed foods to fill you up for the day. Take healthy snacks out with you so that you can ensure you are getting all the nutrition you need to carry on exploring! Also carry a reusable water bottle so that you can always hydrate whilst on the move.

4. Walk – So many travellers miss out on truly seeing a place by taking taxis everywhere. I love walking so that I can take in more sights, but walking is also a fantastic source of exercise that you don’t even feel like you’re having to put the effort in for! You will be amazed at the number of steps you do each day whilst on your travels!

5. Get plenty of sleep – Don’t feel ashamed if you need a rest day; you can’t always do everything! Travelling may not be as stressful as your typically busy 9-5, but looking after yourself in a new country and staying alert can be really exhausting. When you add moving around from place to place, the high-level of social interaction with new people every day, it can be a pretty tiring time. Ensure you listen to your body and sleep. Sleep can also help keep your immune system strong which is a priority whilst on your travels long-term!
